A hodge podge post

IMG_4828

This last week has passed by in a bit of a blurr…

We had our open day at the rescue and made a princely sum despite the fact it poured down. I was face-painting but had a secret weapon this time…..

IMG_4199

my mother-in-law hand knitted these FABULOUS hedgehogs and they sold out within the hour, I even kept one for myself!

IMG_4854

As I was leaving, I was waylaid by the girls in wildlife who pleaded with me to take the hoglets for a few days.

All four are still very much with us, and have now opened their eyes! They’re a lot livelier now; as soon as you get one out the others race around their crate squeaking [loudly] for food!

IMG_4863

Aren’t they getting big?

I took them back today and we tried them with a little milk, but they’re not quite ready to feed themselves just yet, they certainly are interested though, so a few more days and hopefully they’ll be more independent, and then we can all begin sleeping through the night again!

IMG_4867

It’s so much nicer to see babies with their mother though, this little troop were brought in last week and mum and babies are all doing brilliantly!

IMG_4768

So that’s the hogs….now for the dogs!

Hubs and I stumbled across this little gal while walking our two recently, she had a shocking near miss on a busy road so we took her home and hoped to God we could find her owner.

Given that she was unhappy around our dogs I popped her into a crate. Hubs then walked the streets looking for anyone looking hysterical, Y’know… running around and hollering, and sure enough he found such a person, and happily, “Missy”  went home after a few hours, much to my relief! The dangers of open gates eh….a curse on the wind!

IMG_4855

Drum roll please…….introducing …The Adorable …Buddy.

Daughter recently rescued him from a rather horrible environment and has ended up keeping him, her very FIRST dog!

He’s only about twelve months old and is bursting with energy, he can jump ten foot without testing himself.

Buddy had a sleepover with us last weekend, and had a total ball! Sam ADORES him, but he only has eyes for Annie, who of course utterly LOATHES him….sighs….it’ll be a case of slowly, slowly, catch your monkey dealing with her. She did allow him to nap next to her though, which is nothing short of miraculous!

IMG_4762

Still on the animal front, Special Pige is still here and is doing really well. He stays off the ground now and hangs out on the roof of the bird house, Sam and Annie no longer bother him, they have accepted that he’s “Mummys’ Bird!”

As I walk by, he gently coo coos to me……bless…..

IMG_4740

A quick peek at the meadow garden, yes, the lawn mower is broken!

Never mind, it’s still been a great year for the roses….here’s a few.

IMG_4753

Margaret Merril

IMG_4756

Absolutely fabulous…. by name and by nature…

IMG_4730

A David Austin rose whose name escapes me, must get the file out!

IMG_4820

This climbing rose is throwing out white and pale tangerine tea roses, I do like that!

IMG_4733

It’s right behind the pond, accentuating the water lilies.

And finally….

  1. The knitted hedgehogs are wonderful….my MIL was delighted to hear that they all sold out.
Unfortunately, having an extra dog has had an impact on the garden….but hopefully everything will grow back and recover at some point. There have been some beautiful roses this year….I’m so glad you you liked the celebration picture, we did have a lovely day and the sun shone out the whole time! Thanks Shimon.xxx

  2. I just loved those hedgehogs that your mother in law knitted. So cute. And of course, an open day at the shelter is always a lot of fun. I remember them from previous years. And those flowers are just beautiful… especially the roses. I can imagine that your garden is really beautiful now. But the best picture of all was the birthday celebration. That really looked like a joyful gathering. My best wishes to all, Dina. xxx

  3. It’s so weird how blogs suddenly stop popping into the inbox isn’t it? I’ having the same problem with several blogs….I think updates on the site create gremlins!
I am pleased to report that all four hoglets are now independent, self feeding and now able to be left in the rescue overnight….now we all get to sleep!
I am becoming extremely fond of Buddy, apart from when he squeals…then it’s like hot pins in the brain!xxx

  4. I’ ve had to refollow you, I find I missed your last 2 posts, they didn’ t appear. I thought you had gone quiet. Another great story, it is always fascinating to hear what you have been up to. You will be glad when those hoglets grow up. They are cute though and what a gorgeous new addition to the family Buddy is. Fabulous roses!

  5. Ahhhh….I’m sorry to have upset you Jennifer, I actually thought of your Rusty when we had Missy safe in our house, it was the exact same situation, a gate, a windy day and a busy road…..and this dog went the wrong way too, but….we luckily happened to be there, it’s all just luck isn’t it? I was so glad when Missy went home, it was chilling to witness how close a call it was, the car seemed to be speeding up and steering towards her. xxx

  6. Your roses are just lovely Snowbird!
The story of the lost dog brought tears to my eyes. It made me think of Rusty. I wish someone as thoughtful as you had been around to rescue him from the road. His was not a near miss. I hope you can find the owner.
The hedgehogs are so cute, both the real ones and the knitted ones. I am not surprised the sold in an hour!
Happy birthday to your niece. That’s a great party shot!

  7. Love the hedgehogs, the knitted ones and the rescued ones!
Roses are glorious at the moment aren’t they.

    • Thanks Annie….the hoglets and the knitted ones are equally cute! It really has been a great year for the roses, everywhere I go shrubs are laden and climbers are flush with blooms. Good to see you back.xxx

  8. I was going to say that summer is always a busy time of year. Then I realised that your year is busy all the time ! What a delight to see those roses. I like those on the header most of all. So like paper tissues. I do like that type.
The tiny hedgehogs are so cute. I didn’t realise they made a noise 🙂
Your face painting expertise is a gift to the rescue. Those youngsters look like they are pleased with their designs.
And how kind of you to rescue that poor doggie from almost being run over. I bet the owner was so relieved. Lovely to see that your daughter has a new pet now too. She is following in your footsteps.
Your lawn looks like mine. My excuse is that I am letting the wild flowers grow ‘for the bees’. It’s just such a chore.
    Have a great week !!
P.S. that party looks like fun 🙂

    • Animals certainly do keep you busy keggs, but summer is the busiest time with all the juvenile birds, rabbits and hogs….
Little hogs have incredibly loud voices, they squeal their heads off when hungry
The owner was certainly happy to see the dog in one piece, and what a lucky dog it is, it came so close to being mown down!
I’m glad someone else has a lawn like mine….sighs….thanks Keggs.xxx

  9. Fantastic face painting and the baby hedgehogs are adorable. Love special pige too! Looks like a fabulous 21st party. Have a great weekend. x

  10. Another fabulous blog….I must begin with your Mother-in law’s knitted hogs….they are fabulous and I really believe could sell like hot cakes….wow. How much are they…I would like one myself?
Lovely face painting, gorgeous little hogs, contented pigeon, and glorious gardens…I like the meadow look. Also your roses are fabulous – there is nothing quite like a rose.
So glad that little doggy’s family found her, and Buddy is absolutely adorable…give him time and he will be completely running the roost.
The party for your niece, looked fabulous….what fun.
Thank you dear Dina for another fab blog….and may you continue to be blessed with all the love in your life from humans and animals:)xxxxx

    • The knitted hogs are unique aren’t they, I haven’t seen anything like them before. They were selling for five pounds, if you would like one I’m sure she’s knit you one.
It’s good that all is well on the animal front, it certainly makes a nice change…..
Thanks SO much for your lovely comment!xxx

  11. Those four piglets are very cute! You’ve had a great year for roses, as you say. I especially love that second rose.

    • The hoglets are cuties for sure! It’s great they are all still with us! It’s odd the roses have done so well as it’s been so dry….I like that rose too. Thanks Jason.xxx

  12. The hoglets are very interesting and as you say, are close to noshing independently. The comparison with the other family with their mum is good to see. Someone in your family could become a one person production team with the delightful knitted hogs. Your art work on faces is a pleasure.

I wonder if your pigeon will be a long term lodger. Have you any idea what gender it is?

Our meadow has been a regular vigorous occurrence this year, which, is in spite of the rain. It only encouraged more growth. The Buttercups look the same as ours… plentiful.

    xxx

    • I find hoglets fascinating….they always look so very odd, almost prehistoric…..it’s a shame they’re not with their mother though as the mother will always do a much better job, whereas with us it’s all a little hit and miss….
I do think pige is going to stay, adult feathers are beginning to come through so soon I shall know it’s gender, I already suspect female due to it being on the small size.
Glad to know we are both sporting meadows! thanks Menhir.xxx

  13. Lovely knitted hogs. Is the highest milk special as I thought that they couldn’t digest cow’s milk. Glad Missy and owner were reunited – lucky you spotted her

    • We feed our hoglets on goats milk Sue, you’re right, they can’t digest cows milk being lactose intolerant.
Missy must have used a life up in that near miss, she certainly is a lucky girl, it was good to see her back with her owner. Thanks Sue. xxx

  14. I love this post , especially those crocheted hedgehogs. Maybe Annie will warm up to Buddy over time. What a lucky little guy. :o)

  15. Hello lovely – Enjoyed this post muchly – your world is never dull that’s for sure. Glad to see everyone is thriving and coming along nicely. Dogs, garden, hogs and pigeons. Lovely piccies too. Hope the weather stays fine and you get some time for yourself this weekend. p.s. looks like the daughter has got your animal gene too.

    • Glad you enjoyed the post Elaine…..sometimes I would welcome a little dullness….I’d flop in a chair in the garden and do nothing for a month!
We’re off to Birmingham for the weekend with the dogs to celebrate our friends daughters 21st…..they’re coming along like buses now! Thanks Elaine.xxx

  16. I love your posts – they offer a virtual universe, full of love and hope and life … those little hoglets are messy eaters, are they not 😉 – and how lovely that special pige knows you and coos at you! You are a lucky girl. Thank goodness you were able to find the owner of that adorable dog. And you find time to party – you are a gal who knows how to have fun!!! xx

    • Ahhhh….thanks Gilly! Gosh yes!!! Hoglets certainly are messy eaters, but not as messy as ducklings or herring gulls…..they take the biscuit!
It was such a relief to find Missy’s owner….and to see her cheat death!xxx

  17. Lovely post, Dina – what a busy (and fun) time you’re having! I love the look of your ‘meadow’ – so much nicer than bald grass and better for wildlife. I had a real ‘awwwww’ moment at the sight of all those hedgehogs. Really wish I could get hogs in the garden here but too much concrete and urban foxes nearby. Fab roses, do they smell? I really enjoyed my walk around the David Austen roses at Hampton Court, sniffing and smelling as I went! It’s one of those flowers that I want to learn more about, especially how to grow them! ;o) xx

    • Thanks Caro….lol, yes, the “meadow” was at least green…we were beginning to lose the dogs in there! The hoglets are so sweet aren’t they? also a little weird and prehistoric looking I always think. Healthy hedgehogs should be fine around foxes, their only real predator is the badger…..but as you say they need shrubs and hedges….

David Austin roses are gorgeous, mine are so scented, it’s such a delicate fragrance too….enjoy growing them! xxx

  18. I was tickled to death to see your water lilies accompanied by duckweed. We have that, too, in abundance. In fact, there still is some floating around from the last big rain that cleaned out some of the bayous and set everything afloat.

A lost pet is terrible. I’m so glad this one found its way home — both for the the sake of the owner and for the dog!

I have a pigeon who is behaving so strangely. I can’t even describe it. Either it’s taking up break dancing or is diseased — or perhaps has a flea. Such gyrations on the railing! You just wouldn’t believe it. It hasn’t lost its appetite, though, I’ll say that. I guess I’ll just watch and see what happens. There really isn’t anything else to do, since it flies perfectly well, and is gone the minute I step out the door.

    • Lol….I could spend my entire life trying to clear that pond, I just let it all be! Bayous eh? How interesting to have them!
Oh….maybe the pigeon has the pox virus, that causes the type of symptoms you are describing…..maybe if it gets worse and slows down you could catch it. Thanks Shoreacres.xxx

  19. What a a busy, blessed week, Dina! I love the look and sound of Buddy and send blessings as he joins your family!; your beautiful daughter will be such a great puppy-Mom!

Glad that Missy was made safe by you and your dear one, and that she found her way home.

Hooray for the baby hoglets! Thanks to you, they’re doing terrifically! Blessings on their merry futures…

The meadow (!) looks wonderful, Dina, and the roses are just breathtaking! How beautiful!

I’m glad the fundraiser was such a success and really delighted by your face-painting creativity! Yay!

And the family party for your niece looks so very merry and joyful…Thanks for sharing all this loveliness, happiness, and beauty in the world!

    • Buddy is a sweet little dog, daughter loves him! Oh it was such a relief to find Missy’s owner, she’s really lucky to be alive at all…..
We’re all amazed that the hoglets have all made it….we didn’t dare think beyond the day!
It was good that the fundraiser did so well, usually rain brings things to a drastic halt!
It was a lovely party, niece is such a lovely little thing! Thanks so much Kitty.xxx

  20. 21 a very special age, lovely to celebrate.

The face painting is amazing and the knitted hedgehogs and the real ones are just so cute.
    Buddy too … adorable.

A lovely post to read, thank you for sharing these times

    All the best Jan

PS I almost forgot to mention those fabulous roses – you can’t beat them can you!

    • Thanks Jan….I was really pleased with the knitted hogs and it’s great to see the real ones still doing well. It has been a great year for roses rather surprisingly as it’s been so dry.xxx

  21. Thought this was a ‘Hogs Dogs’ post with a few other ‘animals’ slipped in….Ha! Ha! Delightful, especially culminating in that happy picture….Key of the Door! Hugs to her.
    Love those roses…I would, wouldn’t I? Enjoy the Summer…….Hugs!

  22. What a wonderful post, you always make them so interesting! Love the face painting, they are fabulous! So glad the hoglets are doing so well and that you will soon be able to sleep. Also glad that Missy’s owner was found, know that feeling only too well!

    • Thanks so much Pauline, it’s always such fun facepainting for children, and it’s wonderful to still have all four hoglets….It’s awful losing a dog for sure! I was so relieved to see her reunited with her owner!xxx

  23. Oh I so love reading your posts. As old as I am I would have loved that party. looks fun.

I love the little hedgehogs, doing so well……….fab job.

Missing dog nearly had a new owner. Looks so much like Nella when she came to me.
    Glad you found the owner……..

Bless your pigeon…………I have been wondering about him this week.

    Love your roses, beautiful.

    • Ahh…thanks Cheryl, one is NEVER too old to have fun, I intend to age disgracefully!,
How lovely that you were thinking about Special Pige, he’s still here along with all four hoglets.
Yes….the dog does look a little like your Nella, I was so relieved to find her owner…
It does seem to have been a good year for the roses!xxx

  24. Those hoglets are absolutely perfectly adorable, especially gathered around a little lid of milk! Soon, soon, I hope, they’ll be eating on their own.

You surely have had a busy week full of surprise guests (Missy!) and a new darling dog to visit. I love it that SP recognizes you and is trying very hard to fit in with your doggy menagerie at home. That top photo of the roses (Abraham Darby? Evelyn? Strawberry Hill?) with the honey suckle behind (plus echinops?) is absolutely glorious. Is your white climber fragrant? Might it be Sally Holmes? Very sweet.

    • Lol….they are cute little critters, albeit rather strange and prehistoric looking, we are all SO pleased to still have the four of them with us!
AHHA! Yes….the top pic is Abraham Darby…I had forgotten the name until you mentioned it, it seems to like that spot and has put on vigorous growth. It’s growing with teasel that I grew from seed last year so I’m rather excited waiting for the flowers….
Yes….I think the climber is Sally Holmes! You SURE do know your roses!xxx

  25. Glad Missy found her owner and that Buddy has found a new one. Those little knitted hedgehogs are wonderful, no wonder they sold out so fast, you’ll have to get your mother in law knitting up lots more for the next open day. I love that Margaret Merril rose, it looks like it has the faint tint of pink to it, beautiful.

    • Thanks Jo, MIL is going to knit more hogs and other animals too for the next event….I do admire people who can knit!
I am so pleased with the Margaret Merril rose, I only planted it in the spring, I wasn’t expecting such a display.xxx

  26. A most enjoyable ‘hodge podge’ post and lovely pictures. The knitted hedgehogs made me smile, and good to the real ones doing so well.
Nice roses, I especially like the white one. xx

    • Thanks Flighty….the knitted hogs are so sweet, I was so pleased they all sold. I love that white rose too, I only planted it in the old horrible hedging border in the spring.xxx

  27. Those little hedgehogs are darling but I wouldn’t be very good at getting up in the night to feed them. Your Mother’s knitting project is a delight too. No wonder they sold out so quick. Everyone would love to have a hedgehog as a pet, this is the best way to do that. Your meadow is nice and that climbing rose is grand.

    • To be honest Lisa, I don’t like getting up in the night either, it’s always so hard to get back to sleep, but it was worth it weaning the hoglets, they are weirdly cute!!! I was thrilled when my MIL’s knitted hogs sold so quickly, she was really surprised! Thanks.xxx

  28. Glad to see the hoglets doing so well, well done!

  29. Love the first and last photos and it’s good to hear about all the good news. The face paintings are works of art and congrats to your niece. Glad the dog and owner were reunited, Buddy has a new home, Special Pige and the hoglets are doing well. Hope you can get some night rest soon! Oh and the roses are beautiful. The header with the honeysuckle is so pretty.

    • Thanks SO much Linda, it was lovely seeing all the animals doing so well! It has certainly been a marvelous year for the roses……I do love honeysuckle, it really thrives in my garden.xxx

  30. What a delightful hedgehog hodge dog podge post! That’s a tongue twister 😉 Congratulations to your niece ~ what a fun photo… Now to the hedge hoglets….awwwww…. they are coming along well, and what a good feeling that must be seeing them developing. A few more sleepless nights for you, though. Glad the owner of the dog was found, and congrats on your daughter’s first dog, Buddy. Funny about the dog dynamics as he met up with your two. Your roses are beautiful 🙂 Your meadow is at least growing, unlike the dead straw we have here because of the drought. Wonderful face painting!!! My favorite of all is your mother-in-law’s knitted hedgehogs. They are amazing and she could probably go into business and do amazingly well while taking over your nickname…Hedgehog Woman!! 😉

    • Lol….that is indeed a tongue twister!!!
The little hoglets have done so well, they are all now feeding themselves and are all over 60 grams, they weighed 20 when they came in….we are all amazed that they made it! Now we only take them home to keep them warm!
I was so relieved when the dogs owner was found and glad that it wasn’t injured…
Hahahaha….MIL the Hedgehog woman!!! She is a marvelous knitter for sure….I shall see if I can get her set up in business….thanks Glo.xxx
