The weather has been beautifully mild this weekend so hubs and I took ourselves off for a long bike ride yesterday. I must say it was a particularly lovely cycle. Wildlife seemed to be everywhere and the fields were full of thousands of geese all shrieking and taking to the air.

All of a sudden, hubs wobbled horribly on his bike. Then he fell off. It was so sudden I thought he’d been shot or had a heart attack. I almost crashed into him, but managed to stop in the nick of time. As I reached him he leapt up and was tossing his head from side to side in a horrible manner. Finally I pulled his hands from his face and asked him what on earth was wrong……….and……turns out he had a fly in his eye!!!!!

Now, throughout spring and summer, on almost every single bike ride I’ve somehow managed to get a fly or three in my eyes, so I know it hurts. Sometimes it feels as though you’re blinded for life…..but on EVERY occasion hubs has told me to MAN UP!!!! Oh yes….no sympathy, no compassion…..no stopping….zip…..narda…he just powered past me squeaking about how me slowing down almost caused him to crash into me.

So….what to do about his amateur dramatics. Time for revenge????? What???? Me???? As if!!

I found a hanky, mopped his streaming eyes….yes, both were streaming even though a tiny gnat had only bounced off one eyeball, and calmed him through his agonising thrashings, and hopped around after him as he danced down the road, to protect him from oncoming cars. I wish I’d gotten video! Priceless it was. By the time he regained his composure I had chest pains laughing.

Eventually we resumed the bike ride, hubs was a little shaken but after I told him to MAN UP he became very sheepish, and stressed that he thought it was, at the very least, a mammoth wasp that had flown in his eye. Mmmmmmmmm……..Then he had to stop again…..you know….the pain and all!!!

While hubs was re-couperating, I went off to stroke my friend the donkey and his companion bulls, they like to have their heads rubbed too. Then the farmer came along on his buggy with three collies running after him. Miles behind came his old alsatian who is now eleven. Tugs at my heartstrings that old wolf does. Five minutes later, the farmer was coming back down the road again. This time the three collies were all sat on his buggy, and miles behind, again, was the poor old wolf……ahhh, I was nearly sobbing, reminded me of my poor old girl, who died eighteen months ago . So, I gave her a good stroking too. Finally hubs managed the home run!

I did notice that the toadstools and mushrooms are simply everywhere now. Must do a post on them.

  1. I did laugh reading this for I remember the days when I too have been unsaddled by a fly.

  2. Hahaha! couldn’t stop laughing at this – what a wimp x

  3. Ha ha – your post made me laugh, I also love cycling but find it is swallowing flies that cause me more problems.

    • Oh my …YES! I’m always swallowing flies, it’s so gross trying to spit them out while cycling, I’d forgotten about that! Maybe I need a gasmask as well.xxxx

  4. I read this post with a mixture of sympathy and laughter.
I’ve always worn glasses which awarded some protection in my, long ago, cycling days. xx

  5. Poor old hubs ! That’s why I usually wear sunglasses when riding my bike – whether it’s sunny or not !
Lovely photos. I love the donkey. Awhh. And those fly agaric toadstools are stupendous !
    Keggy xx

    • Thanks Kegs, yes, poor old hubs!! Took him a while to recover, rubbing his eye all night he was!

The little donkey is a total sweetheart, I would love to have a donkey around….and a few chickens, and goats!xxxxx

  6. Thanks for commenting over on my blog posting about Flighty 🙂 You’ve written the saga of the fly in the eye so well…I feel like I have experienced it live! (hopefully sans the gnat!) What lovely countryside, and how thoughtful of you to stop to pet the animals. I can read your compassion for the creatures, especially for the Alsatian. Is it law to wear bike helmets where you live? It is here. Wouldn’t keep a fly out though!

    • Thanks Glo……it was a right old saga!

We don’t have to wear helmets here, to be honest I never used to bother until I came off in the ice a few years ago. Now I always wear one. It doesn’t take long to get used to it and it is so much safer.xxx

  7. Am really glad your hubs now knows what you have been suffering and how to ‘man up’ when you get a fly in your eye when cycling! … lol…… ha! How funny!! And you deserved the laugh for sure!!

    Very funny! xxxx

    • Lol….yes, now His Lordship knows how I feel….and I stay on my bike and battle on valiantly, but then I’m only a woman!!!!! Oh my, did I laugh!!!! xxxxx

The toadstools, though mightily toxic, are glorious.

    • Glad you found notifications and comments……and hoping they stay in your inbox in future.
The toadstools are everywhere at the moment, as you say, deadly but very pretty. xxxxx

  9. Great story, lovely pix … :)) How about both of you wearing goggles when you go out for a ride in future???

  10. Wonderful post, photos and story-telling; have to admit, I laughed, too, once I knew your husband was OK!

  11. Ouch! Yes! Horrible experience while riding a bike…..One can get seriously injured by a fall…. However, glad you had a ‘Good Outing’.
    Lovely pics D! Hugs! xx

    • We had a wonderful cycle, well…I did at least! Our favourite biking route is lined by ditches so we constantly cycle through clouds of gnats…..ah well, can’t have it all I suppose. xxxxx
