An apology to three fancy pigeons

OK guys, this is it, time for you all to fly free!

You’re fit and healthy, and more than ready to experience the big wide world world once again.

It’s been an absolute pleasure knowing you!

IMG_1589

Erm….it’s been thirty minutes now, are any of you planning on coming out?

Just asking…..

IMG_1597

So sorry about that guys, but if I hadn’t got you all out, I swear you’d have been in those crates all night. It was over two hours y’know!

IMG_1600

Once again, I apologise!

I didn’t want to run behind you all, clapping and yelling, but I needed to see you flying, instead of just gazing up at me from the lawn.  Good to see that you all flew so well though.

IMG_1603

Ahhh, there you all are, sitting on my neighbours’ chimney and roof! Looking good guys! You take care now, be safe and as I said before, it’s been a pleasure doing business!

IMG_1614

Oh…..hi!

Did you spend the entire night and morning sitting outside my bedroom window?

Well, if you look down you’ll see a bird table in the courtyard, lots of food and water there, so get stuck in!

IMG_1607

Hello you!

Now….why are you staring so intently at my bedroom window? And where are your friends?????

Oh….nooooooo.they wouldn’t, would they???

IMG_1608

Seems they would!

Come on!!! You’ve got to be having a laugh! That happens to be my bedroom, NOT a pigeon coop!

IMG_1609

Guys!

You came in through the window, so I suggest you leave by it. As I said, this is not a pigeon coop.

IMG_1610

OK, look, I’m sorry, I didn’t want to have to physically manhandle you and throw you out the window, but as neither of you had any intention of leaving under your own steam, I really had no choice.

And don’t think for one minute that I didn’t notice the pigeon poop on my duvet!

IMG_1614

This is getting old now guys.

Would you PLEASE stop hanging around that window. I will not be opening it in the near future! It’s been hours now so you may as well go and feed at the bird table….and….haven’t you got a big wide world to explore?

Just saying….

IMG_1626

Fine!

I give in, it’s been over six hours and you haven’t twitched a feather. You lot win! I’ll feed you on the ledge outside the bedroom window……..

By the way, is this going to be a permanent arrangement? Just asking…..

  1. Lol….good to have you grinning. I must admit they put a smile on my face too, although I was somewhat startled to find them on my bed! I refuse to offer indoor privileges although,I may have a dovecot made for them, that counts as indoors….right?xxx

  2. They know very well that you have a soft heart. They’ve heard about Special Pige and they want additional privileges — apparently indoor ones! You had me grinning ear to ear, m’dear.

  3. True Jennifer…..if they have what they need I don’t suppose there’s any reason to move. These three are here for good it seems! Your bunny sounds lovely! xxx

  4. These birds know I good thing when they find it. Why would they want to leave your care and attention! Sometimes I take our rabbit out into the garden. You think he’d be hell bent on finally making his escape into the wild, but no, he’d rather hang out where he feels safe and comfortable!

  5. Sounds like they owe YOU an apology. Seems like some house guests just don’t know when it’s polite to leave.

    • Hahaha…yes, some quests don’t know when they have outstayed their welcome. A first for me, released birds on my bed….whatever next???xxx

  6. Would you like me to send my 3,403 pigeons across the pond to shoo yours away? OK. I exaggerate. But I do have about 30 that have taken up residence, and I’d love to send them on a long trip. They’re smarter than I realized, and have learned to tip the tube feeder to get seed — even though they can’t perch on it. Sigh.

I must say, this tale had me laughing from beginning to end. It’s funny-strange how these bonds develop, and funny-amusing when we humans realize it’s happened. It did occur to me when I read about one being a fantail that that might explain why they were so eager to come indoors, or stay in their carriers. They’re more inclined to be in an enclosed space than in trees, perhaps. Anyway, bless you for being so sweet to them. It will be interesting to see how this all develops, Dina!

    • Oh goodness me!!! NOOOOOO, please don’t send your flock here, I already have a small flock of my own!!!
Pigeons are intelligent birds, I’ve heard that they can identify every letter of the alphabet, they were incredibly useful during the wars too. I know for a fact they recognise individuals…..so I guess my fancy pigeons/doves are here to stay.
The whole saga took me by surprise I must say, they haven’t budged in a week and are now housed and fed on that ledge, while we are kept awake by their cooing most of the night…Glad the story had you laughing! I shall keep you posted! Thanks Linda.xxx

  7. Oh bless these birds – they know where they’re well off. Why would they go off into the world when they have everything they need at your home? Only it seems that it’s now their home, too! A lovely story.

    • Lol….you have it in a nutshell, they’ve settled in and obviously have NO intention of moving. I feed them on the ledge and have rigged up temporary housing for them. They are sweet, really noisy though!xxx

  8. A love the story i please that their love you and want to stay near by give them time and their will find a tree to call home i always wanted some but cant not here any way

    • Thanks Linda. I think they’ve decided that the ledge outside the bedroom is their new home, they’ve hardly moved in a week! I set up some temporary cover to keep them warm and dry and am feeding them there. I’m surprised by how noisy they are! Hope youget to care for some birds one day.xxx

  9. Just regained some giggle control…. oh dear, dear…..what it is to be a surrogate parent.

You definitely require the services of special pige in this stand/sit off. Where is she when needed to push her ilk out into the world?

A seagull behavioural approach to the matter in hand might be a solution.

At least you can see the brood are able to fly even if they haven’t demonstrated any pigeon racing qualities yet, except for one, being able to return to base!

    xxx

    • Good to know I have you giggling….who knew they would come through the window?
The three of them have taken up residence outside the bedroom window, I’ve sorted temporary accommodation to keep them dry and am feeding them there. They hardly move apart from to potter around the roof….
I’m so pleased I got to see them all flying though. Thanks Menhir.xxx

  10. A wonderful post and pictures which had me laughing out loud. xx

  11. Sorry to tell you that one of those pigeons is a Fantail and they are not really up to living in the wild and fending for themselves. You might have to catch it and give it to someone who has a loft and keep it safe as they are easy prey for kitty cats unfortunately. They did look cute in your bedroom though!!
    Cheers from Oz
    Judy
    PS Love your blog

    • Hi Judy, nice to meet you. The fantail was born wild at the rescue, so has some survival skills. We have a flock of birds there that have been released and many have interbred.
All three birds are now settled on the ledge outside the bedroom window and have no plans on moving, apart from to potter around the roof. I’m putting food and water out there, I’ve also sorted temporary shelter for them to keep the wind and rain out and will have proper little pige houses made for them soon. At least if I need to catch them all I have to do is open the window!
      Thanks for your lovely comment.xxx

  12. Such a funny story, yes as Jo says you look after them so well, they know when they are on to a good thing!!

    • Thanks Annie, they are still here and more than settled. I think I have three new friends, I wasn’t expecting them but they are most welcome to stay.xxx

  13. Oh Dina, ha ha ha ha ha – I am still chuckling!! They know when they are on to a good thing! And yes, I think I’d be a teeny bit irritated at chicken poop on my duvet cover …

    • Glad to have made you chuckle Gill, I was astounded to find them on my bed….I had just changed the duvet too and had to strip the bed, oh, how I hate stripping the bed! Thanks Gill.xxx

  14. Very funny! All I can say is, what smart pigeons! Life looks so much safer in every way on that bed!

  15. These birds have absolutely zero reason to leave your garden! I’d stay if I was a bird, too!

  16. Funniest, sweetest thing I’ve read–and seen–in a long time: Thank you soooo much, Dina! I couldn’t believe they’d go thru the window and right onto your bed. My goodness! They love you more than a food table full of all kinds of earthly delights…They must be the happiest pigeons in the UK. 🙂

Now I must now what happens next. 🙂 What a grand idea for a children’s book, no? I can just imagine your wonderful artwork!

Thank you again for this wonderful burst of joy to my week. xxoo

    • Thanks so much Kitty, they certainly surprised me, I’ve never known released birds go through the window before……they’re totally settled now, they live on the ledge outside the window and coo most of the night. They potter around the roof but don’t seem to want to go far. I have made a makeshift shelter for them to keep them warm and dry….I’ll have to sort decent housing for them soon, it’ll have to be made to fit on the ledge. I seem to have acquired three doves/fancy pigeons!
Lol….I think you should write the story…I’ll sort the pics! They have names now, Billy-Bob, the fantail pige, Bella, the dove cross and Ben, the poor runty male dove. The other two have paired up, but they allow him to hang around.xxx

  17. Methinks you have made a friend. Or two. Or three..

  18. Oh what a great story, I’m still laughing.
But I must admit I was surprised to see them inside – and in your bedroom – the cheek of them !!!

That’s why I just love your blog, whenever I visit I don’t quite know what your post is going to be about … but they are always great.

In other ways hope your September has started well.

    All the best Jan

    • Tell you what Jan, seeing birds on my bed is certainly a first, I’m scared to open the windows now as they have bedded down on the roof, they’re not interested in the big wide world, just the roof outside the bedroom window. Who knew a few doves could be so noisy!
Lol….I never quite know what I’m going to write about truth be told, glad you enjoy my ramblings!!! They say never work with animals….xxx

  19. Oh dear, you just did too good a job and they don’t want to leave, maybe they think you are their Mum now!

    • They are determined to stay around, they’ve hardly budged from the roof in over a week, cooing at the crack of dawn is the new norm it appears! Thanks Paulie.xxx

  20. They definitely know when they’re onto a good thing! As for the poop – it is supposed to be lucky! xx

  21. You see this is what happens when you take such good care of these little creatures….they love you…they don’t want to leave….your home is there home:):)xxxx

    • I think you have it in a nutshell Janet, birds obviously do remember the staff who care for them at the rescue, and the timid, vulnerable ones, linger longest, they gravitate back to the people they know, how they do that when they fly off in a new environment baffles me! The survival instinct sure is strong! xxx

  22. They’re obviously ‘at home’….. They DO when they’re on a ‘good’ jaunt…. Super! Hugs!💕💕

  23. … and I am still laughing!!!! Oh Dina, I bet they would love to come in and get a nice spot where to sleep, just “inside” that lovely bedroom of yours! I think that Jo is absolutely right…
I guess they are affectionate creatures, and really, I can’t understand why over here many people place pointed iron on the windowsills to keep them away!
I hope our “Animal Protection” had such a person like you…
Hugs and have a lovely night
    :-)c

    • Lol….finding newly released birds on my bed has to be a first! Astonished I was!!!
I don’t understand why people want to drive birds away either, they too are entitled to live in this world. Planet earth belongs to us all!
The birds seem quite settled, they roost on the roof outside the bedroom window and are beginning to tentatively explore their new environment during the day, only for thirty minutes or so…..they are lovely, and if they want to stay, they’re more than welcome. Thanks Claudine.xxx

    • They sure surprised me…talk about tenacity. They’re all still here, roosting as I type. I will have to get used to keeping the upstairs windows shut! Good to hear from you.xxx

  24. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you look after them so well that they never want to leave.

    • Thanks Jo…I suppose our creatures are coddled, I was surprised to see them reunite and turn up outside the bedroom window, given they all took off in different directions, birds continually surprise me….their instincts for locating each other and food are astonishing. Every release is different….xxx

  25. A lovely story, you do make me laugh. Of course they are staying, they’ ve heard all about you. Does this mean that you can never open your window again? I can just imagine you waking up and finding the three of them lined up on your pillow. And knowing you, you’ ll give in and let them.
BTW, it’ s a good thing, you’ d made your bed. You wouldn’ t want the world to see your unmade bed.

    • Lol…thanks Chloris, you make me laugh too! I have no doubt, that while those three remain, which is clearly becoming the case, that window will stay shut!
I was sneakily grateful that my bed was made, I’m a tidy freak….I always make it..I was rather saddened to see how creased the duvet looks though, I draw the line at ironing bed linen, life is far too short, but wished I had on this occasion!xxx
