Surviving the storms, The Shack and defying the odds

I’ve lost count of the storms that have torn through the area of late, but thankfully we’ve had little damage. The wooden greenhouse/shed, now formally christened “The Shack” held it’s ground and remained standing.

The Shack has been given a coat of preserver externally and now has the potting table installed. The plastic covers protecting the windows still need removing internally and externally, but apart from that it’s good to go.

New shelving has been ordered and the lemon and avocado tree have now taken up residency. I’ve decided to grow flowers in here and veg and herbs in my other greenhouse.

Hubs has been busy moving his toys tools into the shed area which is deceptively more spacious than it looks.

Now that all the garden cushions, tools and trees have been moved from the greenhouse, I’ll be able to give it a tidy and a much needed spring clean.

Meanwhile, potatoes have been a chitting and lettuce, spinach, tomatoes and basil have been sown.

More and more crocus have been popping up in the lawn…

and rather surprisingly, clump after clump have survived the torrential rain by closing.

In other news Littl’urchin celebrated her third birthday recently, and, as always, I collected all the flowers that were blooming in the garden for her. Now, at three, she participated with great enthusiasm in pass the parcel and pin the tail on the donkey. Sadly, there was blatant cheating on her part.

Happily, Sam is still defying the odds, touch wood. He was given four to eight weeks and has now passed sixteen. More importantly, his quality of life is good as he still runs, walks, eats well and plays with his siblings.

Curly cat is hanging on in there too!

And Finally…

After waiting for our builder to do some major renovations in the front garden for nearly two years, we were finally given a quote and a date for work to begin. To our horror we were quoted 21k for the work which is due to begin in May. Hmmmm…thinking hats are on!

Until next time, stay safe guys.

  1. I can’t believe your little one is three. You will find your shack very useful, great that it stood up through the gales. 21k??? Are you having a gold plated lawn?

  2. We also had very strong winds here in the south… luckily my husband asked for help of a gardener to tidy up the garden. Unfortunately for various reasons that I don’t list, right now I lack the desire to go out even as it’s cold again and arthritis in my hands bothers me.
Your gardening house (shack) is wonderful… we keep the seed-boxes inside the house, but there are still several varieties of vegetables that we will have to order online. I think we all try not to think too much about what happens just over 2000 km away from here. I suffer in seeing so much brutality and innocent people and animals who are in terror…
It’s not right, indeed, it’s profoundly wrong!
I pray that everything will come to a stop with no further attacks, but the human’s mind for many is based on greed.
But don’t they think that one day, sooner or later, you will dia and leave everything here?
Hugs and kisses to all of you, claudine

    • Oh, sorry to hear of your arthritis, hopefully it will improve as the weather grows warmer. Yes, it’s horrendous seeing and hearing about people and animals suffering and being displaced, let’s hope for a speedy end to all the horror. Thanks Claudine. Love and hugs to you all.xxx

  3. Love seeing everything growing! We have about a foot of snow. Lovely, but white. It makes my heart glad to see that Sam is still alive and happy.

  4. By heck that shack looks proper! Is it completely necessary to remove the coverings from the glass, would keeping it on the inside help defuse the brightness??

LilUrchin, cheat, I think not, just being highly astute in the game of play, lol. Three already, crickey time it on its winged chariot. I’ve had enough of storms and coldness, I am ready for Spring and the return of my furry visitors.

    • Thanks AnneMarie. You have me thinking re the glass coverings now….
Yes, those three years have flown by! Oh, you must miss #not your cats! xxx

Springtime for you – autumn for us

  6. It’s hard to believe three years have passed. Lil’Urchin’s bouquet is beautiful, and I’m sure she’s grown even more beautiful, too. Apparently she’s getting more clever, too; I laughed at your comment about her ‘blatant cheating.’

It’s hard for me to call your garden shed a ‘shack.’ It’s really quite elegant, and I know it will serve you well. It’s always exciting to get a new “space,” and it’s always a bit of a surprise to see how quickly it fills up! Have the animals checked it out, or are they banned from the premises? It’s certainly good to know that Curly Cat and Sam still are doing well. Every day is precious — we just don’t know what’s around the corner, but there’s still a good bit of living to do!

    • I can’t believe how grownup Litt’urchin is. She actually told her gramps he needed a shave the other day! Yes, the dogs have all had a good sniff around the new shed. It’s a wonderful space that’s quickly filling up with seed trays. Yes, every day is precious so it’s good to stay in the present as that is what each day is. Thanks Linda.xxx

As others have also commented 21K is a lot of money, no wonder your thinking hats are on.
Belated birthday wishes to Littl’urchin as she celebrated her third birthday 🙂

    Happy March Wishes.

    All the best Jan

  8. Yes, I love that shed just like everyone else, and it can withstand the weather! Hard to believe your Littl’urchin is three, they grow up so fast! It is lovely when they are old enough to talk to you, or have learnt how to cheat in games!
Good to see Sam enjoying himself, I guess the other dogs keep him going too.
Good luck with the landscaping, we got a recent quote that was incredible, so we decided not to go ahead with it, and do little bits at a time. There is a scarcity of tradesmen and gardeners here, which makes it hard to get anything done.

    • I was delighted to see the shed still standing after the high winds. How it’s filling up already, a great little space it is. Everyone seems to be struggling to get tradesmen in, and yes, the quotes are scary! Thanks Gerrie.xxx

  9. The Shack is looking great and so glad to hear that it has weathered the battering of recent weather. I cannot believe your granddaughter is three, that time has gone so quickly! Glad to hear that Sam is doing well and like others I am wondering what you are getting for your £21K.

    • Thanks Sustainablemum. Time certainly flies by looking back. I’m hoping that quote doesn’t actually go up!xxx

  10. Love the shack. Wow what are you doing having a heated pool installed in your garden!

So glad that Sam is still doing well.

  11. Ooh, ‘The Shack’ looks wonderful; I definitely have shack-envy! So pleased that Sam and Curly are still living their best lives and I can’t believe that Littl’urchin is 3! £21K?!!! I can’t wait to see what you have done. xx

    • Thanks Veggiemummy, it’s always great to get a little more space. We were pretty shocked at that quote, apparently building materials have gone through the roof.xxx

  12. I know things are increasingly expensive. Two years is a long wait for a builder. I’ve just had some ground work done and pebbledash repaired. Maintenance , maintenance….

You are always busy with some project or other. The shack/tool shed and home grown groceries.

The years go in fast with little ones. The cut flowers are sweet and such a delightful idea.

So pleased to hear about Sam, curly cat and the other sibs. Xxx

    • I was astonished how long we had to wait for a builder, so many friends have been waiting forever too. Prices of materials have shot up, it’s crazy! Hopefully, you’re not out of pocket too much. Oh, time seems to be flying by! Thanks Menhir.xxx

  13. It’s all looking and sounding good. The shack looks rather impressive.
Good to read that Sam and Curly are still doing okay.
    Thanks, and you too.

    • Thanks Flighty. I’m looking forward to having more growing space, I never seem to have enough space foe sowing seeds.xxx

  14. Hooray, hugs, smooches, and blessings to your sweet Urchin, Sam, and Curly, as they all continue to share their light and unique gifts. 💚💛💜🧡❤️

And—WOW—that shed, plus a greenhouse, makes you my number one gardening heroine. You just rock! I can’t wait to see the bounty and beauty that comes from all this magnificence.

Also excited to see the results of this new landscaping, diamond-edged, right?

    • Haha, you do have me smiling!!! Oh yes…diamond edged for sure. Building work costs an arm and a leg now as the price of supplies has gone through the roof! Love and hugs to you all.xxxx

  15. Your little one must think she has come to a magical place when she visits you! So many exciting and wonderful things happening! And I’m so pleased about Sam. There’s a book called The Shack which was a massive best-seller a few years ago. Have you heard of it? It’s also a film https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-shack/wm-paul-young/9780340979495 I’d be interested to know what you think.
    Hugs xx

    • Thanks Gill. I watched the film, it was really moving, yet terrifying at the same time. I really must read the book. Littl’urchin seems to think it’s a hut so that’s it’s name now.xxx

  16. The Shack looks great and is clearly a survivor….which is very important today!

    21K sounds bloody well ridiculous…

Lovely to see the flowers, which through the grey and rain we have a lot of here:)

    Sending love XXXXX

    • Thanks Janet. It’s crazy how much things cost now, building-wise. We had quotes triple that for the same work! Love and hugs to you.xxxx

  17. Wow! 21K! Such good news about Sam and Curly, I hope they both continue to do well, that brings a smile to my face. I’m sure you’ll get lots of use out of The Shack, it’s nice to have a little extra growing space.

    • Yes, 21k indeed. The pandemic will have lasting effects for sure. Everything building wise now costs an arm and a leg, and you have to wait for years to get a builder in. Thanks Jo.xxx

  18. It was nice to see the front garden area where the dogs can run around. Glad to hear that Sam is still part of the doggie gang and Curly Cat is also doing well. I’m sure the storms have been even stronger over your way so I’m happy that the shed got installed and it’s proving to be very useful. Where does the time go? – belated happy birthday wishes to your little granddaughter. I love the tradition of the flower posy.

    • Thanks Linda. The dogs do enjoy a gallop in the front garden, yes, I’m relieved to see still enjoying life, one day at a time. Time sure does fly by!xxx

  19. Garden Girl

Hello. So pleased to hear that Sam is doing okay and that you are all standing after the storms. Time goes so quickly, I cannot belive Littl’urchin is 3!!! The quote sounds expensive!!

    • Time sure flies by! Yes, the quote floored us but we went with it as all the materials needed would be bought now, they are due to go up yet again. we sure live in strange times. Good to hear from you, hoping all is well. Thanks Steph.xxx

  20. Wow. 21k in £ — yikes. I’m a little afraid to ask what 21k covers…
Three years old? How did Lil Miss H get to be THREE?
So glad to see Sam still enjoying life with you and his fur friends. Amazing, he is.
I’m so impressed with how your new greenhouse has withstood all the elements. Love that it has a hideaway for tools.
Hurray for those heroic crocuses! They are beautiful.

    • Yes, that price floored us but the price of materials has shot through the roof. Oh, totally agree, that child has to stop growing up so fast. I do love that new wooden greenhouse, it really has a great vibe, hopefully I won’t over-clutter it! Thanks Anne.xxx
