Not feeling very hopeful…

Wildlife is nightmarish at the moment. The first young hedgehogs are pouring into the rescue along with dozens of chicks. There are baby everythings everywhere and it really is stressful. It’s impossible to tell what will survive and what won’t.

A hedgehog was brought in yesterday and gave birth to six youngsters overnight. The mother had been worried by a dog and the stress was obviously too much for her as she rejected all six babies. Four had already died when we arrived this morning, leaving two. The endless problem….what to do???

I decided to bring the remaining two home and try to rear them. Sadly another died before I left, leaving one.

So…here I am with the lone survivor. The problem with young hogs is that they don’t suckle, they lap at their mother’s milk so it’s really difficult to get them started on goats milk.
This youngster is eating hardly anything and will need feeding day and night every two hours.
It’s going to be an uphill battle and I’m not optimistic….not at all. Ah well….I can try.
It does seem lively enough though and crawls into it’s mitten by itself.

And to round this horrible day off….the dogs caught a young blackbird chick this morning, which died a few hours later. A day of carnage. Well…off to try another feed.
